* Minimum of 16 semester hours of child and family studies courses; at least 6 hours must be at the 600 level. Can include courses from MS degree.
**Must be preceded by a master’s thesis or predoctoral research project that is approved by the student’s doctoral committee.

CFS Foundation Courses: Theory and Research Literature: (9 credits)

  • CFS 510: Theories of Human Development
  • CFS 550: Theory and Research in Family Studies
  • CFS 552: Diversity in Children and Families

CFS Specialization Electives (16 credits)

  • Minimum of 16 semester hours of child and family studies courses; at least 6 hours must be at the 600 level. Can include courses from MS degree.

Research Methods (6 credits)

  • CFS 570 and a 600-level methods course selected from CFS 650, CFS 660, or CFS 633

Statistics/ Analytic Courses (9 credits)

Electives outside of CFS (6 credits)

  • Can include additional methods/analytic courses

Professional Seminar (2 credits): CFS 572 (1) and CFS 672 (1)

  • Includes professional socialization, human subjects protocols, IRB process, grant writing, conference presentations, and creating a curriculum vitae.

Dissertation Research: CFS 600 (24 credits)

  • Must be preceded by a master’s thesis or predoctoral research project that is approved by the student’s doctoral committee
  • Total Course Requirements: 72 hours

Entering without a MS thesis

  • Students who enter without a thesis from their MS institution must complete a predoctoral research requirement in addition to core/elective course requirements and a dissertation.

Entering with a MS thesis

  • Students entering with a MS thesis do not have to complete a predoctoral research requirement.
  • The MS thesis must be approved by the dissertation committee.

  • The priority application deadline is January 1. Applicants who submit their applications by January 1 will be given priority consideration for assistantships and campus visit invitations. We will make every effort to consider applications after this date. However, late applicants may miss funding opportunities.
