Student Spotlight: Abigail James with Bethany Christian Services

If you were to sum up your placement in one tagline/movie quote/song title, what would it be?

“Do I know what I’m doing today? No. But I’m here, and I’m going to give it my best shot.”

-Hansel, Zoolander

What is one piece of advice you would give your pre-practicum self?

I would tell myself to get into a routine before the first day of practicum. There are so many life changes that happen around the semesters you do your internship, and it honestly is exhausting. (In a good way, of course!) I think getting into a routine early would have made the transition into a 40-hour work-week a lot easier!

Describe your most meaningful experience so far:

A couple of weeks ago, I got to sit in on the placement of an infant with a family. The adoptive parents anxiously awaited meeting their child as I was able to sit in the room and capture the moment for them on one of their phones. It was such an incredible moment to be able to see the joy on their faces when their son was brought into the room and they met him for the first time. Tears fell from both of their eyes, and pretty much everyone’s in the room too because it was such a beautiful moment! I was inspired to pursue an internship with Bethany because my sweet cousins were adopted, so this experience was beyond meaningful to me because I can now say I have experienced adoption from two different perspectives.
