Anne Miller Stott
Coordinator: ECE Internship
I began my career at the University of Tennessee as an undergraduate student in Child Development – Early Childhood Education. I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree and a license for teaching kindergarten through 3 rd grade in 1982. Wanting to experience the world outside Tennessee I became an Au Pair – or nanny – in 1982 for a German family living close to Hamburg, West Germany. I lived, worked, and traveled in Europe for almost a year then returned to Knoxville to begin my graduate work in 1983.
From 1983-1985 while working on my masters coursework, I had the distinct privilege of teaching and working as a graduate assistant with toddlers in the Child Development Labs at UT. In August 1985 I was hired to coordinate the Child Development Lab Infant program at UT. I finished my Masters degree in Child & Family Studies in 1987 with a thesis entitled “Parents’ Expectations of Toddler Child Care Programs”. I continued to work in the Child Development Labs in various roles including Director until August of 2002.
While serving as Director of the Child Development Labs I helped the program achieve accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 1993, 1996, and 2000. During this time I also served on the National Organization for Child Development Lab Schools (NOCDLS) board as a Member at Large. In 1998 I had the extreme fortune of joining a Reggio Study Tour to the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Through this life changing professional opportunity I began studying the Reggio Approach to Early Childhood Education and the fascinating ways this approach has influenced the field of Early Childhood Education.
In 2002, I shifted my career focus from the preschool age to early elementary by becoming one of the coordinators of UT’s Pre-K – 3 rd grade Early Childhood Education Teacher Licensure program. Some of my primary responsibilities in this position include advising undergraduate students and supervising graduate interns during their professional internship year teaching in the public schools. I also have the opportunity to assist with teaching the professional seminars that go along with the internship. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to observe my student interns positively impact the lives of young children through their teaching and professional practice.
